Biodiversity Scenarios

by Paul Leadley, Biodiversity Scenarios Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Biodiversity Scenarios books, This synthesis focuses on estimates of biodiversity change as projected for the 21st century by models or extrapolations based on experiments and observed trends. The term "biodiversity" is used in a broad sense as it is defined in the Convention on Biological Diversity to mean the abundance and distributions of and interactions between genotypes, species, communities, ecosystems and biomes. This synthesis pays particular attention to the interactions between biodiversity and ecosystem services and to critical "tipping points" that could lead to large, rapid and potentially irreversible changes. Comparisons between models are used to estimate the range of projections and to identify sources of uncertainty. Experiments and observed trends are used to check the plausibility of these projections.

Global Biodiversity In A Changing Environment

by F.Stuart Chapin, Global Biodiversity In A Changing Environment Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Global Biodiversity In A Changing Environment books, The scientific community has voiced two general concerns about the future of the earth. Firstly, climatologists and oceanographers have focused on the changes in our physical environment, ie climate, oceans, and air. And secondly, environmental biologists have addressed issues of conservation and the extinction of species. There is increasing evidence that these two broad concerns are intertwined and mutually dependent. Past changes in biodiversity have both responded to and caused changes in the earths environment. In its discussions of ten key terrestrial biomes and freshwater ecosystems, this volume uses our broad understanding of global environmental change to present the first comprehensive scenarios of biodiversity for the twenty-first century. Combining physical earth science with conservation biology, the book provides a starting-point for regional assessments on all scales. The book will be of interest to those concerned with guiding research on the changing environment of the earth and with planning future policy, especially in accordance with the Global Biodiversity Convention.

Biodiversity Change And Human Health

by Osvaldo E. Sala, Biodiversity Change And Human Health Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Biodiversity Change And Human Health books, Biodiversity Change and Human Health brings together leading experts from the natural science and social science realms as well as the medical community to explore the explicit linkages between human-driven alterations of biodiversity and documented impacts of those changes on human health. The book utilizes multidisciplinary approaches to explore and address the complex interplay between natural biodiversity and human health and well-being. The five parts examine health trade-offs between competing uses of biodiversity (highlighting synergistic situations in which conservation of natural biodiversity actually promotes human health and well-being); relationships between biodiversity and quality of life that have developed over ecological and evolutionary time; the effects of changing biodiversity on provisioning of ecosystem services, and how they have affected human health; the role of biodiversity in the spread of infectious disease; native biodiversity as a resource for traditional and modern medicine Biodiversity Change and Human Health synthesizes our current understanding and identifies major gaps in knowledge as it places all aspects of biodiversity and health interactions within a common framework. Contributors explore potential points of crossover among disciplines (both in ways of thinking and of specific methodologies) that could ultimately expand opportunities for humans to both live sustainably and enjoy a desirable quality of life.

Ecology And Human Well Being

by Pushpam Kumar, Ecology And Human Well Being Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Ecology And Human Well Being books, This volume presents some of the latest developments in research in interdisciplinary traditions of ecological economics in India. It outlines strategies and policies that can be adopted to ensure ecological sustainability. Containing both methodological and empirical essays, the book covers a number of critical issues including: - ecological and social resilience - ecosystem services and quality of life - policy reform for sustainable development - governance and ecosystems - valuing changes in the ecosystem - communities and collective action Overall, the contributors maintain that it is essential to rethink the criteria used in the design of development processes in order to avoid committing ecological blunders. The volume focuses on the need for bridging the knowledge systems of ecology and economics and, as such, will be of interest to researchers, environmentalists, economists and development practitioners.

Biodiversity Monitoring In Australia

by David Lindenmayer, Biodiversity Monitoring In Australia Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Biodiversity Monitoring In Australia books, Ecological and biodiversity-based monitoring has been marked by an appalling lack of effectiveness and lack of success in Australia for more than 40 years, despite the billions of dollars that are invested in biodiversity conservation annually. What can be done to rectify this situation? This book tackles many aspects of the problem of biodiversity monitoring. It arose from a major workshop held at The Australian National University in February 2011, attended by leaders in the science, policy-making and management arenas of biodiversity conservation. The diversity of participants was deliberate – successful biodiversity monitoring is dependent on partnerships among people with different kinds of expertise. Chapter contributors examine what has led to successful monitoring, the key problems with biodiversity monitoring and practical solutions to those problems. By capturing critical insights into successes, failures and solutions, the authors provide high-level guidance for important initiatives such as the National Biodiversity Strategy, similar kinds of conservation initiatives in state government agencies, as well as non-government organisations that aim to improve conservation outcomes in Australia. Ultimately, the authors hope to considerably improve the quality and effectiveness of biodiversity monitoring in Australia, and to arrest the decline of biodiversity.
