Counter Terrorist Law And Emergency Powers In The United Kingdom 1922 2000

by Laura K. Donohue, Counter Terrorist Law And Emergency Powers In The United Kingdom 1922 2000 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Counter Terrorist Law And Emergency Powers In The United Kingdom 1922 2000 books, Counter-terrorist Law and Emergency Powers in the United Kingdom, 1922-2000 examines in detail the introduction and development of the 1922-1943 Civil Authorities (Special Powers) Acts (SPA), the use of which contributed to the fall of the Northern Ireland parliament and the assumption of direct rule by Westminster. The book reveals over 100 Regulations that the northern executive introduced under this legislation which escaped analysis. The 1973 Northern Ireland (Emergency Powers) Act was drawn almost wholly from Regulations introduced under the Northern Ireland Stormont regime. Similarly, the 1974 Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act drew on legislation previously in place. The book examines not only the statutes themselves, but also why they failed to be temporary measures and became firmly ensconced in the British response to Northern Ireland. This discourse of rights leads into consideration of European counter-terrorist legislation and cases brought before the European Court of Human Rights for the exercise of emergency law in the United Kingdom.

Download Accountability And Review In The Counter Terrorist State books, Counter-terrorism is now a permanent and sprawling part of the legislative and operational apparatus of the state, yet little is known about the law and practice of how it is reviewed, how effective the review mechanisms are, what impact they have, or how they interact with one another. This book addresses that gap in knowledge by presenting the first comprehensive, critical analysis of counter-terrorism review in the United Kingdom, informed by exclusive interviews with policy makers, politicians, practitioners and civil society.

Censorship In The Two Irelands 1922 39

by Peter Martin, Censorship In The Two Irelands 1922 39 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Censorship In The Two Irelands 1922 39 books, This is the first book to tell the story of censorship in Northern Ireland and the south between 1922 and 1939. Censorship in the Two Irelands examines the differences in how the two regimes treated freedom of speech - and finds some surprising similarities. Beginning with the history of censorship under British rule and during the Irish Revolution it shows how the new states built on that legacy. It examines all forms of censorship in the period: political, film, literature, radio and theatre and puts them into an international context showing how the two Irelands at some times resembled other jurisdictions but also created their own unique legacies of repression. This is the story of how a Unionist government treated Nationalist dissent, IRA propaganda and labour organisations. It compares Northern repression of these groups to southern actions against the IRA and Irish communists. It also tells how the two states reacted to foreign culture in cinema and literature. It shows how a powerful lobby of conservative, Catholic activists convinced the Irish Free State to introduce stringent censorships of film and literature. The scandalous decisions of the period, when authors like Steinbeck, Shaw and O'Faoilain were banned are examined but are also put in their international context. The most detailed study yet of the early years of censorship in the two Irelands, this work questions how serious either government really was about protecting freedom of expression. It poses challenges about how far a state should tolerate dissent, new ideas or controversial art; problems that are as relevant today as they were eighty years ago.Ã?Â?Ã?Â?
