Credit Growth In Emerging Europe

by Sophie Sirtaine, Credit Growth In Emerging Europe Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Credit Growth In Emerging Europe books, High credit growth in Emerging Europe, generally considered a sign of catching-up with the "old" Europe, has begun receiving considerable attention among investors and policymakers alike. Given heightened global risks and the demands under the European Union accession process, the need to better understand this high credit growth's drivers, riskiness, and the possible macroeconomic and financial stability consequences is strong. The authors adopt a holistic approach in reviewing the rapid credit growth experienced in the region, examining macroeconomic, financial sector, corporate sector, and asset market consequences and possible vulnerabilities. They consider three possible scenarios-a catching-up with older European countries, a soft landing as experienced by Portugal in the early 2000s, and a hard landing as experienced by Asia in 1997.

Bank Ownership And Credit Growth In Emerging Markets During And After The 2008 09 Financial Crisis A Cross Regional Comparison

by Guodong Chen, Bank Ownership And Credit Growth In Emerging Markets During And After The 2008 09 Financial Crisis A Cross Regional Comparison Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Bank Ownership And Credit Growth In Emerging Markets During And After The 2008 09 Financial Crisis A Cross Regional Comparison books, This paper examines bank credit growth in emerging markets before, during, and after the 2008-09 financial crisis using bank-level data, focusing on the role of bank ownership. Credit growth by foreign banks lagged behind that of domestic banks in 2009 in Asia, and in 2010 in Latin America and emerging Europe. State-owned banks instead played a counter-cyclical role during the crisis in particular in Latin America and emerging Europe, and credit by stateowned banks also grew faster than that of private banks after the crisis in Latin America. Expansionary monetary policy on average led to higher credit growth. Banks in Latin America and Asia that relied more on retail funding had higher credit growth, in particular during the crisis. Better-capitalized banks and banks with more liquid assets also had faster credit growth. Finally, banks in countries with stronger banking regulation had higher credit growth during the crisis.

Credit Growth In The Middle East North Africa And Central Asia Region

by Joe Crowley, Credit Growth In The Middle East North Africa And Central Asia Region Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Credit Growth In The Middle East North Africa And Central Asia Region books, Rapid private sector credit growth in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia has been a result of strong economic growth, financial deepening, and banks’ willingness to explore consumer credit markets. Economic growth, the initial ratio of private sector credit to GDP, price volatility, and nonoil exports are found to be significant explanatory variables, while oil exports and spillovers from oil exporting neighbors were not found to have any significance. The credit growth has financed consumer spending and home ownership rather than investment.

Banking Structure And Credit Growth In Central And Eastern European Countries

by Burcu Aydin, Banking Structure And Credit Growth In Central And Eastern European Countries Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Banking Structure And Credit Growth In Central And Eastern European Countries books, This paper presents a modeling framework that delivers joint forecasts of indicators of systemic real risk and systemic financial risk, as well as stress-tests of these indicators as impulse responses to structural shocks identified by standard macroeconomic and banking theory. This framework is implemented using large sets of quarterly time series of indicators of financial and real activity for the G-7 economies for the 1980Q1-2009Q3 period. We obtain two main results. First, there is evidence of out-of sample forecasting power for tail risk realizations of real activity for several countries, suggesting the usefulness of the model as a risk monitoring tool. Second, in all countries aggregate demand shocks are the main drivers of the real cycle, and bank credit demand shocks are the main drivers of the bank lending cycle. These results challenge the common wisdom that constraints in the aggregate supply of credit have been a key driver of the sharp downturn in real activity experienced by the G-7 economies in 2008Q4- 2009Q1.
