Counter Terrorist Law And Emergency Powers In The United Kingdom 1922 2000

by Laura K. Donohue, Counter Terrorist Law And Emergency Powers In The United Kingdom 1922 2000 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Counter Terrorist Law And Emergency Powers In The United Kingdom 1922 2000 books, Counter-terrorist Law and Emergency Powers in the United Kingdom, 1922-2000 examines in detail the introduction and development of the 1922-1943 Civil Authorities (Special Powers) Acts (SPA), the use of which contributed to the fall of the Northern Ireland parliament and the assumption of direct rule by Westminster. The book reveals over 100 Regulations that the northern executive introduced under this legislation which escaped analysis. The 1973 Northern Ireland (Emergency Powers) Act was drawn almost wholly from Regulations introduced under the Northern Ireland Stormont regime. Similarly, the 1974 Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act drew on legislation previously in place. The book examines not only the statutes themselves, but also why they failed to be temporary measures and became firmly ensconced in the British response to Northern Ireland. This discourse of rights leads into consideration of European counter-terrorist legislation and cases brought before the European Court of Human Rights for the exercise of emergency law in the United Kingdom.

Talking Stones

by Elisabetta Viggiani, Talking Stones Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Talking Stones books, If memory was simply about past events, public authorities would never put their ever-shrinking budgets at its service. Rather, memory is actually about the present moment, as Pierre Nora puts it: “Through the past, we venerate above all ourselves.” This book examines how collective memory and material culture are used to support present political and ideological needs in contemporary society. Using the memorialization of the Troubles in contemporary Northern Ireland as a case study, this book investigates how non-state, often proscribed, organizations have filled a societal vacuum in the creation of public memorials. In particular, these groups have sifted through the past to propose “official” collective narratives of national identification, historical legitimation, and moral justifications for violence.

The Dead Of The Irish Revolution

by Eunan O'Halpin, The Dead Of The Irish Revolution Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Dead Of The Irish Revolution books, The first comprehensive account to record and analyze all deaths arising from the Irish revolution between 1916 and 1921 "A monumental new book [and] an incredible piece of research. . . . Formidable, authoritative and handsomely produced, The Dead of the Irish Revolution is a fitting memorial."--Andrew Lynch, Irish Independent "Will surely serve as the indispensable reference work on this topic for the foreseeable future. . . . A truly remarkable feat of close scholarship and calm exposition."--Gearoid O Tuathaigh, Irish Times Weekend This account covers the turbulent period from the 1916 Rising to the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921--a period which saw the achievement of independence for most of nationalist Ireland and the establishment of Northern Ireland as a self-governing province of the United Kingdom. Separatists fought for independence against government forces and, in North East Ulster, armed loyalists. Civilians suffered violence from all combatants, sometimes as collateral damage, often as targets. Eunan O'Halpin and Daithí Ó Corráin catalogue and analyze the deaths of all men, women, and children who died during the revolutionary years--505 in 1916; 2,344 between 1917 and 1921. This study provides a unique and comprehensive picture of everyone who died: in what manner, by whose hands, and why. Through their stories we obtain original insight into the Irish revolution itself.
