State Building Economic Development And Democracy

by Keiichi Tsunekawa, State Building Economic Development And Democracy Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download State Building Economic Development And Democracy books, The remolding of the state from an autocratic to a democratic one in postwar Japan is sometimes regarded as a successful case of external intervention for state-building. When Americans landed in Japan two weeks after Japan's acceptance of unconditional surrender, they expected to meet a fanatic and intransigent people. Instead they were surprised by the orderly and peaceful behavior of Japanese soldiers and citizens (Tamaki 2005, 13-20). Disarmament, demobilization, repatriation, and reintegration (into their home towns/villages) of millions of soldiers proceeded surprisingly smooth between 1945 and 1948. The authoritarian state gave way to a democratic one within two years of the beginning of the American occupation and democracy has persisted since1. And finally, the Japanese economy had already begun to experience high growth when the occupation ended in April 1952. In every respect, American occupation policies seem to have been successful. Against this image of the American occupation in Japan, this paper will argue that American policies were only partially helpful in the democratic remolding and economic development of postwar Japan. The prewar political and economic experiences of the Japanese themselves, and the psychological impact of the defeat, played equally important roles in the democratic rebirth of the Japanese state. Those in search of solutions to the development challenges facing fragile countries today should understand that Japan's 'success' did not begin in 1945 and was not the result of a peace settlement quickly followed by new institutions. The ground work for Japanese success was 80-90 years in the making. Analysis of state-building, economic development and democracy in Japan must start from the Meiji restoration of 1868.

Presidentialism Violence And The Prospect Of Democracy

by Yao-Yuan Yeh, Presidentialism Violence And The Prospect Of Democracy Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Presidentialism Violence And The Prospect Of Democracy books, This book tackles the perennial debate about whether presidentialism is associated with democratic breakdown. We find evidence that presidentialism could contribute instabilities to a democratic system, though it does not directly follow that those instabilities will trigger a democratic breakdown.

State Building And Development

by Keijiro Otsuka, State Building And Development Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download State Building And Development books, Why does a huge income gap still exist between developed and developing countries? Plausible causes on the surface may be the difference in technology, the quality of human resources, and economic institutions, but on the deeper level the gap reflects the success and failure of state building which is vital for economic development. This book provides cutting-edge knowledge on state building, economic development, and democratization based on case studies of Japan, ASEAN, South Asia, and selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The book examines the interaction between land policies and the state building in sub-Saharan Africa. It also pays special attention to corruption, which affects the relationship between the state and the development, and decentralization, which exerts influences on the contentious politics. Finally, the book also sheds new light on the failure and success of industrial policies based on a literature review and a case study of the rapidly growing pharmaceutical industry in Bangladesh. This book is one of the few studies which squarely addresses state building and economic development, and will be of use to those interested in this subject, development practitioners, and policymakers in developing countries.

Economic Development And Nation Building In Ethiopia

by Daniel Teferra, Economic Development And Nation Building In Ethiopia Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Economic Development And Nation Building In Ethiopia books, Ethiopia is an ancient country with rich potential, but it has not yet resolved the fundamental question of economic development and nation building. The Ethiopian population lives under the threat of recurring famine and war. The conflict that existed between Ethiopia and Eritrea for several decades was never resolved peacefully, and a new conflict has recently emerged on top of the old. Economic Development and Nation Building in Ethiopia gives valuable insight into these problems. The book first checks the major views of development with the Ethiopian experience and examines the impact of the IMF program and the Post-Cold War globalization on the Ethiopian development. Showing the historical disparities in development between Ethiopia and the now industrialized societies of the world, the book examines the possibilities for Ethiopian economic development and nation building. Author Daniel Teferra investigates the incentives for a shared market and broader democracy between Ethiopia and Eritrea by taking a closer, more focused look at the two societies.
