The Dynamics Of Medieval Iceland

by Shirley Crisler, SFCC, The Dynamics Of Medieval Iceland Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Dynamics Of Medieval Iceland books, As witness to four hundred years of social, economic, and political change, the sagas of medieval Iceland provide access not only to a single energetic past but to processes of continual change. In this innovative book, which connects the political economy of medieval Iceland and its rich cultural artifacts, E. Paul Durrenberger brings anthropological perspectives to bear on the study of medieval Iceland and brings medieval Iceland into the purview of anthropology. The social order of stratified, stateless medieval Iceland contained a dynamism that inexorably led to the discord of the Sturlung age. Icelanders interpreted their experiences within existing cultural categories and from these interpretations produced the family sagas and the Sturlung sagas. Durrenberger convincingly argues that the sagas are not simply thirteenth-century accounts of earlier times but also the cultural artifacts of the age that created them; moreover, the free translations of the sagas are really nineteenth- and twentieth-century artifacts that impose market and modern state perspectives on the radically different society of medieval Iceland. The rendering of the sagas as a political act revaluing honor, reciprocity, and law can be understood only in the cultural context of their time. For anthropologists unfamiliar with the Icelandic tradition, Durrenberger meticulously illustrates his arguments with contextual analyses of saga plots and episodes. He presents his anthropological theses in a way that will enlighten historians, social scientists, and saga and other literary scholars. By addressing methodological issues of translation and contextualization and using sophisticated models of medieval domestic economy and cross-cultural comparisons, The Dynamics of Medieval Iceland serves as an exemplary case study in the expansion of social contexts for literary analysis as well as in the anthropological use of literary and historical data.

Kabbalistic Manuscripts And Textual Theory

by Daniel Abrams, Kabbalistic Manuscripts And Textual Theory Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Kabbalistic Manuscripts And Textual Theory books, Kabbalistic Manuscripts and Textual Theory uncovers the unstated assumptions and expectations of scribes and scholars who fashioned editions from manuscripts of Jewish mystical literature. This study offers a theory of kabbalistic textuality in which the material book the printed page no less than handwritten manuscripts serves as the site for textual dialogue between Jewish mystics of different periods and locations. The refashioning of the text through the process of reading and commenting that takes place on the page in the margins and between the lines blurs the boundaries between the traditionally defined roles of author, reader, commentator and editor. This study shows that kabbalists and academic editors reinvented the text in their own image, as part of a fluid textual process that was nothing short of transformative. This book is certainly monumental, offering in its seven hundred pages a wealth of documentation and distilled argument that manages to be both comprehensive in its materials and transparent in its critical insights. It is rare indeed that a work of such formidable scholarship can actually be a pleasure to read and convincing in its elucidation of what are often extremely complex documentary circumstances and editorial traditions. From the foreword by David Greetham

The Study Of Medieval Manuscripts Of England

by Richard William Pfaff, The Study Of Medieval Manuscripts Of England Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Study Of Medieval Manuscripts Of England books, This volume consists of sixteen important studies, all dealing with manuscripts produced in medieval England. The first group reflects the meticulous analysis of liturgical manuscripts that characterize the honorand's career. These treat both early and late medieval liturgical concerns and include liturgy for Gilbertine lay brothers, a lost treatise by Amalarius, the re-working of an Anglo-Saxon Gospel book; the music for the Vigil of St. Thomas Becket; and the continuity of Processions from Old Sarum to Salisbury Cathedral. Two studies examine the liturgies having to do with saints in Sarum missals and breviaries. The second, historical, section of this volume includes three studies on Anglo-Saxon manuscripts. Six other analyses concern the high and later Middle Ages.

Marvellous To Behold

by Deirdre Elizabeth Jackson, Marvellous To Behold Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Marvellous To Behold books, The word “miracle” is derived from the old Latin miraculum, meaning “something wonderful.” For the initial witnesses of the magnificent images denoted by the word, miracles did indeed provide a wealth of wonders that evidenced not only God’s concern but also his willingness to intervene in the daily lives of believers. Though many associate miracles and their illustration with the heart of the Christian religion, fewer realize that the scope of their imagery extended to Jewish and Islamic texts as well—and that throughout the medieval period, the same miracles were featured in the illuminated holy books of each of the three religions. The lavishly illustrated Marvellous to Behold earns its breathtaking title by focusing on the illustrations of miracles in illuminated manuscripts as well as the retelling of the miracle tales themselves. Deirdre Jackson selects 117 of these miraculous images, which are fully reproduced here in brilliant color, and provides detailed text retelling their miracle stories and explaining the significance of their inclusion. Marvellous to Behold explores a wide variety of illuminated sources in its accounting of these fascinating images such as legal texts, song books, devotional works, historical chronicles, the lives of the saints, and of course, biblical manuscripts. Chronicling the medieval artists who took inspiration from everyday life in their illustrations of universal tales such as Jonah and the Whale, this volume suggests that the works of these artists have just as much to tell us about the societies in which they lived—and their relation to wonder—as about the supernatural. Truly “something wonderful” for anyone interested in miracles, the history of religions, or medieval life and art, this attractive and eye-catching volume is not to be missed.
