Living In Singapore Arts Culture

by Nithia Devan, Living In Singapore Arts Culture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Living In Singapore Arts Culture books, Singapore’s art scene has been growing and developing over the past 20 plus years and is now vibrant and exciting. The Singapore government is implementing a lot of infrastructure to promote Singapore as an arts hub. Museums have undergone renovations to make them state-of-the-art; buildings in the central and civic districts are being turned into galleries and centers for the arts. Apart from creating the right “hardware” for the arts, there is also emphasis on raising the standards of the “software.” There are grants available for the performing arts and more emphasis on arts education. There are more international events taking place here and local arts groups travel aboard to perform. This has resulted in the raising the bar for overall artistic standards. This chapter is perfect for those who fear that Singapore is “soul-less” and there is nothing much to do apart from mindless indulgence in retail therapy in gleaming shopping malls. This chapter will help guide you through the abundant choices that makes up the Singapore arts and culture scene.

Singapore Spirituality And The Space Of The State

by Joanne Punzo Waghorne, Singapore Spirituality And The Space Of The State Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Singapore Spirituality And The Space Of The State books, This book examines spirituality in Singapore, showing how important the city state is for understanding contemporary global configurations of urban space, religion, and spirituality. Joanne Punzo Waghorne highlights how the formal religious spaces-temples, churches, and mosques-have been confined to allotted sites on the map of Singapore, whereas various “spiritual” organizations, particularly of Hindu origins and headed by a guru, still continue to operate as “societies” classified by the government with other “clubs.” These unconventional religiosities are not confined but ironically make their own places, meeting in ostensive secular venues: high-rise flats, malls, businesses, and community centers, thus existing in the overall space of religion, commerce, and the state. The book argues that State of Singapore also operates between the secular and the religious, constructing an overarching spatial regime that both accommodates and yet rivals the alternate spheres that spiritual movements construct under its umbrella. Both spatial configurations challenge the presumed relationships between myth and reality, religion and commerce, the ethereal and the concrete, the sacred and the secular, on the levels of self, community, and polity. Singapore, now deemed a model for urban development in Asia, also offers an understanding of a new post-secularity and perhaps reveals where the urbanized world is headed.

Full-colour image plates, newly commissioned essays and a biographical timeline of the artist within the catalogue flesh out the inflections of Chen’s oeuvre.
