LeGuin's Always Coming Home, the changing role of women in science fiction pulp magazines, and the representation of progress and social change in popular graphic novels.

Mass Murder In The United States

by Grant Duwe, Mass Murder In The United States Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Mass Murder In The United States books, Is mass murder a historically new phenomenon that emerged in the 1960s? How has it changed over time? And what causes a person to commit multiple murders in a matter of hours or even minutes? This book explores these questions by examining 909 mass murders that took place in the United States between 1900 and 1999. By far the largest study on the topic to date, it begins with a look at the patterns and prevalence of mass murders by presenting rates from 1900–1999 and by describing the characteristics of mass killers. Placing the phenomenon within the broader social, political, and economic context of the twentieth century, the work examines the factors that have influenced trends in the prevalence of mass murder. It also discusses more than 100 case studies within three distinct periods of mass murder activity (1900–1939, 1940–1965, and 1966–1999) to illustrate more clearly the motives of mass murderers and the circumstances surrounding their crimes. The final chapters take a look at media coverage and the role it has played in the social construction of mass murder. The Use Of Sympathetic Imagination And The Influence Of Perceptions Of History On The Development Of Cultural Attitudes In Early Childhood

by Margaret Ruth Vincenzi, The Use Of Sympathetic Imagination And The Influence Of Perceptions Of History On The Development Of Cultural Attitudes In Early Childhood Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Use Of Sympathetic Imagination And The Influence Of Perceptions Of History On The Development Of Cultural Attitudes In Early Childhood books, The argument presented in this dissertation explores four main strands. 1. How social groups select the historical knowledge of 'others' that is disseminated to the young. 2. Stage theories of development in early childhood. 3. The role of imagination in the construction of world views and how attempts to control it affect ways of being able to see the world differently. 4. Speculation about the social significance of cultural attitudes developed in the early years. These are accompanied by a speculative survey which, although designed to consider attitude development in early childhood, developed out of an interest in the Bradford StoryBox Project (1987 -1993). The notion under consideration evolves from personal experience in the field of early childhood education. The dissertation seeks to reconcile theories of individual development with perceived social needs of survival in a pluralistic context. It questions the commonly held belief that young children do not notice the ideas, images and reality in the world around them and develops the argument that, without sympathetic imagination, the study of history can reinforce a limited view of the world which omits, distorts or marginalises the history of 'outsiders'. Perceptions of such a view, socially internalised as commonsense and absorbed, individually, at a very early age, negate the development of the notion of interdependence as one that is essential for human survival. For sympathetic imagination to develop, however, it seems that it is important to consider the significance of the early stage of human development in which children are able to explore their world with a freshness and curiosity which, for many, is lost in the socialising experience.
