Download Transcultural Flows Of English And Education In Asian Contexts books, This book investigates the “collision” or “synthesis” that occurs between people when cultures are shared and reconstructed in different contexts and result in hybridity. By focusing on transcultural flows the authors acknowledge the hybridity in educational concepts and practices that emerge as a result of relationships and processes that occur inside and outside of the classroom as people and their cultures come together.

The Struggle For A Multilingual Future

by Christina P. Davis, The Struggle For A Multilingual Future Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Struggle For A Multilingual Future books, In The Struggle for a Multilingual Future, Christina Davis examines the tension between ethnic conflict and multilingual education policy in the linguistic and social practices of Sri Lankan minority youth. Facing a legacy of post-independence language and education policies that were among the complex causes of the Sri Lankan civil war (1983 - 2009), the government has recently sought to promote interethnic integration through trilingual language policies in Sinhala, Tamil, and English in state schools. Integrating ethnographic and linguistic research in and around two schools during the last phase of the war, Davis's research shows how, despite the intention of the reforms, practices on the ground reinforce language-based models of ethnicity and sustain ethnic divisions and power inequalities. By engaging with the actual experiences of Tamil and Muslim youth, Davis demonstrates the difficulties of using language policy to ameliorate ethnic conflict if it does not also address how that conflict is produced and reproduced in everyday talk.

English Language Pedagogies For A Northeast Asian Context

by Michael Hadzantonis, English Language Pedagogies For A Northeast Asian Context Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download English Language Pedagogies For A Northeast Asian Context books, This book investigates, from a sociocultural, linguistic, and pedagogical perspective, the conceptual and pragmatic frameworks that characterize secondary language learning in a Northeast Asian context. Hadzantonis contextualizes these salient domains through an engagement with social and cultural themes such as the familial, political, as well as cultural commodities and socioeducational structures. In this way, the text employs tools such as transnational theory and performativity and develops a model that contributes to the resolution of one of the greatest economic issues of the time, that of ineffective secondary language learning.

by Glenn Toh, English As Medium Of Instruction In Japanese Higher Education Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download English As Medium Of Instruction In Japanese Higher Education books, This book sets out to uncover and discuss the curricular, pedagogical as well as cultural-political issues relating to ideological contradictions inherent in the adoption of English as medium of instruction in Japanese education. Situating the Japanese adoption of EMI in contradicting discourses of outward globalization and inward Japaneseness, the book critiques the current trend, in which EMI merely serves as an ornamental and promotional function rather than a robust educational intervention.

Subjectivity In Asian Children S Literature And Film

by John Stephens, Subjectivity In Asian Children S Literature And Film Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Subjectivity In Asian Children S Literature And Film books, Winner of the Children's Literature Association Honor Book Award This volume establishes a dialogue between East and West in children's literature scholarship. In all cultures, children's literature shows a concern to depict identity and individual development, so that character and theme pivot on questions of agency and the circumstances that frame an individual's decisions and capacities to make choices and act upon them. Such issues of selfhood fall under the heading subjectivity. Attention to the representation of subjectivity in literature enables us to consider how values are formed and changed, how emotions are cultivated, and how maturation is experienced. Because subjectivities emerge in social contexts, they vary from place to place. This book brings together essays by scholars from several Asian countries -- Japan, India, Pakistan, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Australia, Thailand, and The Philippines -- to address subjectivities in fiction and film within frameworks that include social change, multiculturalism, post-colonialism, globalization, and glocalization. Few scholars of western children's literature have a ready understanding of what subjectivity entails in children's literature and film from Asian countries, especially where Buddhist or Confucian thought remains influential. This volume will impact scholarship and pedagogy both within the countries represented and in countries with established traditions in teaching and research, offering a major contribution to the flow of ideas between different academic and educational cultures.

Rethinking Learning What Counts As Learning And What Learning Counts

by Judith Green, Rethinking Learning What Counts As Learning And What Learning Counts Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Rethinking Learning What Counts As Learning And What Learning Counts books, The rapid transformations of social, economic, and cultural worlds of learners in school and nonschool settings that we are facing today are reminiscent of the transformations that accompanied the industrial revolution at the turn of the 20th century. Like those at the turn of the 20th century, education researchers and their constituencies (e.g., students, teachers, community members, and policy makers) are faced with a series of questions: How are we to respond to the educational challenges of this new millennium? How do we engage with new forms of learning, the influence of new media on children’s lives, changing community dynamics, and many long-standing and tenacious educational and social problems? And how can research and theory constructively and critically engage with the demands and imperatives of government educational and social policies? In this book, the editors bring together an intergenerational group of researchers who represent both new and long-standing perspectives and debates on the shapes, definitions, and processes of learning in the context of global cultural and economic change.
